Burley-in-Wharfedale School top Fairtrade winners

Burley and Woodhead CofE Primary School in Burley-in- Wharfedale are delighted to have been awarded the top Fairtrade award, Fair Achiever. This achievement is the culmination of 3 years’ work, with the school previously receiving the Fair Aware and Fair Active awards. The Fair Achiever is the highest award schools can be given and recognises that the school has fully embedded Fairtrade into their daily life and worked to raise awareness of Fairtrade in their local community.

The school’s Learning Mentor, Sally Hughes, who has led the project alongside the School Council, said “this is a brilliant achievement for the school. We believe that learning about Fairtrade is a powerful way for children to find out about issues beyond the classroom and make a positive contribution in the world in which they live. At the start of the project, the children in school had little awareness of Fairtrade other than it was something to do with bananas. Now they are fully aware of the supply chain, the impact on producers and the huge range of Fairtrade products which are out there. It’s a super opportunity to learn about how individual consumer choices can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

The award recognises the ongoing commitment Burley and Woodhead have made to learning about, promoting and taking action for Fairtrade wherever possible.
